Airtel Launches AI Powered Spam Detection

Bharti Airtel has launched India’s first AI-powered network-based spam detection solution, designed to tackle the issue of spam calls and messages for its customers. This innovative tool, a first-of-its-kind by a telecom service provider in India, alerts users in real time to suspected spam calls and SMS

The solution is free and will be auto-activated for all Airtel customers without requiring any service requests or app downloads. “Spam has become a menace for customers. We have spent the last twelve months to solve this comprehensively,” said Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and CEO of Bharti Airtel. “Today marks a milestone as we launch the country’s first AI-powered spam-free network that will shield our customers from intrusive and unwanted communications.”

The solution offers dual-layer protection with filters at both the network and IT systems levels. Every call and SMS passes through this AI shield, which processes 1.5 billion messages and 2.5 billion calls daily in just 2 milliseconds. The system analyzes call and SMS data in real time, successfully identifying 100 million potential spam calls and 3 million spam messages every day.

Developed in-house by Airtel’s data scientists, the AI-powered solution uses a proprietary algorithm to identify and classify calls and messages as “Suspected SPAM.” It examines various parameters, such as the caller’s or sender’s usage patterns, call and SMS frequency, and call duration, comparing this information against known spam patterns to flag suspicious communications.
