Viasat Direct to Device Trial Successful for Automotive Sector

Viasat, a leading satellite communications company, has successfully demonstrated direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity for the automotive sector, marking a significant step toward integrating satellite technology into vehicles. The trials, conducted over four months between Blumenau and Curitiba in Southern Brazil, are claimed to be the first of their kind in the country, according to Viasat

D2D Satellite Connectivity Trial

During the trials, vehicles connected directly to Viasat’s L-band satellites via Skylo’s network, enabling narrowband tracking, monitoring, and messaging capabilities. The tests were carried out by Viasat’s ecosystem partner GuardianSat using a 3GPP-based non-terrestrial network (NTN) infrastructure with connectivity from Acceleronix. To facilitate seamless connectivity, Quectel Wireless Solutions provided CC660D-LS NTN satellite modules and antennas, allowing vehicles to switch between satellite and cellular networks.

Automotive Applications with D2D Technology

By leveraging 3GPP-enabled D2D technology, car manufacturers and service providers can now introduce innovative services to consumers and businesses. This technology ensures continuous connectivity in remote areas, supporting applications such as:

  • Predictive maintenance for vehicles
  • Emergency assistance in areas without cellular coverage
  • Real-time supply chain tracking
  • Precise positioning data for logistics and navigation

Viasat’s Chief Technical Officer for Commercial Services highlighted the transformative potential of D2D satellite technology, stating “When people think of direct-to-device, they often associate it with keeping cell phones connected via satellite. While that is a crucial benefit, the real opportunity lies in the transport industry. D2D satellite connectivity can save lives by ensuring connectivity when drivers are outside cellular networks, while also providing real-time data for applications that enhance efficiency and sustainability in the transport sector.”

Quectel Wireless Solutions also emphasized the significance of this development. Their Sales Director for LatAm stated “The integration of Quectel’s CC660D-LS satellite module with Viasat’s network highlights the transformative potential of this technology. Seamless roaming between satellite and cellular networks ensures uninterrupted connectivity, unlocking a broad range of critical applications.” This successful demonstration sets the stage for mass adoption of D2D satellite connectivity in the automotive sector, paving the way for a more connected, efficient, and safer transport industry.
