BSNL 5G Rollout News- Government to Fast Track 5G Rollout

BSNL 5G Rollout News- Government to Fast Track 5G Rollout

The government is fast-tracking BSNL’s 5G rollout, with ongoing efforts to upgrade the state-run telecom operator’s 4G network. As part of this initiative, BSNL has set an ambitious target of deploying 100,000 new mobile towers, of which 65,000 4G towers have already been installed. Alongside these upgrades, momentum is building for the launch of BSNL’s 5G services

To support the rollout, the government is exploring the involvement of foreign vendors in the 5G network equipment procurement process, with a $2 billion bid planned for essential gear.

Accelerating BSNL’s 5G Network Deployment

The 5G network upgrades are expected to move forward rapidly once key decisions are finalized. According to an report, BSNL remains committed to leveraging indigenous technology for its 5G expansion, similar to its 4G deployment. However, government support is seen as crucial in ensuring a swift and efficient rollout of high-speed mobile broadband services.

For 4G services, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been supplying equipment in collaboration with Tejas Networks and C-DOT

  • C-DOT supplies core network solutions
  • TCS integrates these systems

Reports suggest that the government may allocate 50% of BSNL’s 5G tender volume to domestic vendors, while the remaining share will be open to both domestic and international suppliers.

BSNL’s 5G Plans and International Vendor Inclusion

BSNL aims to establish between 70,000 and 100,000 mobile towers to support its nationwide 5G rollout. The company is preparing to launch a Standalone (SA) 5G network, which operates independently of existing 4G infrastructure.

The decision to involve foreign companies in network equipment procurement follows discussions within the Telecom Advisory Committee. While TCS continues to lead BSNL’s 4G upgrades, the government is now looking to expand vendor participation to accelerate the transition to 5G.

With these developments, BSNL is poised to play a significant role in India’s 5G ecosystem, strengthening its position in the telecom sector.
