TCS Highlights Transformative Impact of 5G and GenAI on Industries Report

“Generative AI and 5G technology together have the power to revolutionize industries,” stated a senior executive at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). “While Generative AI (Gen AI) is a popular term, it’s often misused. However, there are definitive areas, particularly in telecom, where its impact can be profound.”

Generative AI in Network Management and Security

Mayank Gupta, TCS’s Global Head of Sales and Strategy for Network Solutions and Services, highlighted how Gen AI could optimize network management and security. “In network management, Gen AI could predict data flow and enhance performance, improving user experience,” Gupta explained. “In security, it could detect and predict threats proactively, strengthening network defense.”

Gen AI’s role extends to data-intensive fields like blockchain and cryptocurrency, where it can facilitate efficient data processing, making it indispensable in these sectors.

Challenges in 5G Monetization

On 5G monetization, Gupta pointed out the challenge of defining effective industry use cases. “It’s no longer about just ‘design, deploy, and get paid.’ Now, collaboration and an ecosystem approach are critical,” he said. Solutions need to align with revenue generation rather than a traditional business model, shifting toward an outcome-based approach that lets industries adopt 5G without heavy upfront investments.

Global 5G Adoption

Gupta noted that 5G adoption is progressing in stages, with the US and Canada leading globally, and countries like Korea and Brazil accelerating due to spectrum liberalization. “Mobile private networks are among the first areas showing significant progress, transforming operational technology and focusing on cost-saving or revenue-driving solutions.”

Industry-Specific 5G Implementations

Globally, industry-specific 5G use cases are emerging. The Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands uses 5G for automated container handling, while oil and gas dominate the Middle East and Africa, and mining is the focus in Australia and Brazil. Gupta shared that over half of current data traffic originates from enterprise use cases, with consumer-driven data expected to soon follow as a key monetization opportunity.
