BSNL Successfully Trials Indigenous 5G Technology, Launch Set for Early 2025!

BSNL’s Breakthrough in Indigenous 5G Technology: A Milestone for Indian Telecom

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has marked a significant milestone by successfully testing its locally developed 5G technology on the 3.6 GHz and 700 MHz bands. This achievement underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in telecommunications as BSNL gears up for a full 5G launch by early 2025. Here’s how BSNL is reshaping India’s telecom landscape with its strides in 5G technology.

Successful 5G Trials in Key Frequency Bands

Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that BSNL has successfully conducted 5G trials of its radio access networks (RAN) and core infrastructure in the 3.6 GHz and 700 MHz bands. This move highlights BSNL’s dedication to advancing homegrown 5G capabilities. Access to the premium 700 MHz band—a frequency valued for its wide coverage—is especially noteworthy, as only BSNL and Reliance Jio have secured it due to its high costs, which deterred other operators.

Seamless Transition from 4G to 5G by 2025

BSNL currently operates around 39,000 4G sites across India, including urban and rural areas, with plans to expand to 100,000 sites by mid-2025. These 4G sites are strategically positioned to support a smooth upgrade to 5G, facilitating a quicker and more efficient rollout. This expansion will enhance BSNL’s network reach and strengthen connectivity across the country.

Commitment to Affordable Services for Customer Growth

BSNL’s strategy to avoid a tariff increase, as confirmed by CMD Robert J. Ravi, aligns with its goal to grow its customer base. While private telecom operators raised tariffs, BSNL saw a notable increase in new subscribers, particularly in July 2024, as reported by TRAI. By keeping rates affordable, BSNL aims to attract budget-conscious users, especially in rural regions.

Advancing India’s Vision of Self-Reliance

Through the deployment of indigenous 5G infrastructure, BSNL is advancing both its technological offerings and India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision in telecommunications. As the first telecom operator to roll out a fully homegrown 4G and 5G network, BSNL is setting a powerful precedent in the industry.

BSNL’s successful indigenous 5G trials signal a transformative shift for India’s telecom sector. With its focus on affordability, widespread coverage, and robust technology, BSNL’s upcoming 5G rollout is set to deliver high-speed connectivity to urban and rural areas alike, fostering digital inclusivity across India.
