Green 5G Initiative Launched by Airtel

Bharti Airtel has launched a “Green 5G” initiative aimed at enhancing energy efficiency across its mobile network. The collaboration focuses on reducing carbon emissions by approximately 143,413 metric tons of CO2 annually through energy-efficient solutions in Airtel’s 4G and 5G Radio Access Networks (RAN), as announced by Airtel.

Airtel Green 5G Initiative

Responding to the growing demand for data and the rapid expansion of 5G networks in India. Airtel aims to reduce carbon footprint through innovative energy-saving technologies, aligning with the company’s broader environmental goals.

Key Components of the Collaboration

The partnership includes the integration of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to optimize energy usage, with the following features:

Zero-Traffic, Zero-Watt Operation: Minimizing power consumption during periods of low network traffic to conserve energy.

AI/ML Integration: Leveraging AI/ML to automate and optimize energy-saving software across 4G and 5G networks.

Digital Design Optimization: Using advanced digital design tools to improve energy efficiency without compromising network performance.

ReefShark System-on-Chip (SoC): Utilizing a new generation of SoC to reduce energy consumption by an additional 15% by adjusting power usage based on traffic loads.

Airtel’s Emission Reduction Targets

Airtel has set ambitious goals to reduce emissions across its operations, implementing key initiatives such as promoting energy efficiency, using green energy, and adopting renewable energy solutions. The company has deployed solar-powered systems at around 25,000 sites and significantly increased its use of renewable energy at data centers, sourcing over 220,541 MWh of green power in FY2024. Airtel’s efforts also include building climate-resilient infrastructure, improving resource efficiency, and enhancing waste management practices.
