Fastest 5G Standalone Network Launched in Japan

NTT Docomo has announced plans to commercialize the deployment of New Radio-Dual Connectivity (NR-DC) technology, which it claims will offer Japan’s fastest download speeds, reaching up to 6.6 Gbps on its 5G Standalone (SA) Network. The company will begin offering this technology on August 1, 2024, in selected areas within Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture, with a gradual expansion planned.

NR-DC Technology

NR-DC technology integrates three frequency bands: Sub-6 (3.7 GHz and 4.5 GHz) and millimeter-wave (28 GHz). It allows simultaneous transmission across multiple frequencies by connecting two 5G base stations. Initially introduced in December 2021, Docomo’s 5G Standalone services began combining one Sub-6 frequency with the millimeter-wave band in August 2022, achieving download speeds of up to 4.9 Gbps.

Integration of Multiple Frequency Bands

The new development enhances these speeds by utilizing both Sub-6 frequencies in combination with the millimeter-wave band. The Standalone (SA) mode is an optional 5G service for specific smartphones and mobile devices under a 5G service contract. Supported devices include the Xperia 1 VI SO-51E, Galaxy S24 Ultra SC-52E, and Galaxy Z Fold 6 SC-55E.

To access these advancements, users need a 5G SA subscription, a compatible device, and a suitable SIM card. Docomo plans to expand its range of millimeter-wave band-compatible devices and extend service coverage to improve customer convenience.
