Indian telecom operators are currently providing subpar services, raising concerns within the government. As a result, the central government is considering revisiting the Quality of Services (QoS) parameters that telcos must adhere to. Major operators like Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea, and Bharti Airtel argue that the existing rules are sufficient and see no need for new parameters. However, given the ongoing customer issues, the government is exploring potential new measures to ensure better service quality.
Since the rollout of 5G in India, problems such as call drops have become common. Improved speeds and lower latency alone do not guarantee a satisfactory mobile network experience for consumers. According to a TNN report, telecom companies are concerned about the potential burden of new regulations.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) prioritizes improving service quality. Last year, TRAI issued a consultation paper addressing serious service quality issues in India.
While private operators have nationwide 4G coverage, Jio and Airtel now also offer 5G services across the country. With an impending tariff hike, telcos must ensure they provide high-quality services. Indian telecom operators contend they are doing their best given current revenue levels, noting that mobile network service tariffs in India are among the cheapest globally, which limits their earning potential.
