Europe Can’t Stay Behind in 5G Tech, Says Olaf Scholz

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz advocated for the expansion of the 5G mobile network in Europe during the Nordic summit on security and competitiveness held in Stockholm on 13th May 2024. Emphasizing the importance of embracing this advanced technology, Scholz stated, “We have to ensure that 5G becomes the standard technology across Europe at the earliest, so that we do not lag behind other continents.”

Highlighting Europe’s advantage in having leading telecommunications companies, Scholz specifically mentioned Swedish firm Ericsson, noting their success not only within Europe but also on a global scale.

During his visit to Ericsson, Scholz was accompanied by leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. He also disclosed discussions held in Berlin with Nokia, underscoring the companies’ provision of “highly secure technology in terms of security concerns.” This remark comes amid ongoing debates regarding the potential exclusion of certain components from Chinese firms Huawei and ZTE in European 5G networks.
