Telecom Operators Embrace 5G for Growth in eMBB, FWA, Differentiated Connectivity, and Innovation

As global economic conditions continue to exert pressure, telecom operators worldwide are focusing on business expansion through fifth-generation (5G) networks, targeting areas such as enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), fixed wireless access (FWA), differentiated connectivity solutions, and ecosystem innovation. Ericsson’s study, released Thursday, underscores this trend, noting a positive momentum in 5G deployment and uptake worldwide, with an exploration of new services and business opportunities. The industry faces intense competition, with mobile subscription penetration exceeding 100% amid challenging financial conditions, rising inflation, and escalating network operation costs.

According to the ‘Mobility Report Business Review 2024’ by Ericsson, the study reveals that over 290 5G networks have been launched globally, with more than 40 telecommunications companies offering services based on 5G standalone (SA) technology. Concurrently, the global uptake of 5G subscriptions has surged to 1.6 billion, constituting 18% of all mobile subscriptions.

Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks at Ericsson, highlighted the significance of this development, stating that while the initial phase of the 5G value journey has commenced, it remains in its nascent stages. Reflecting on the evolution of 4G deployment and its role in shaping today’s mobile broadband business, Jejdling emphasized the need for leveraging the evolving capabilities of 5G networks to unlock new value pools crucial for sustainable growth among service providers.
