Google Pixel Phones Will Soon Enable eSim Conversion

In 2022, Apple took a bold step by eliminating the physical SIM slot in the iPhone 14 and fully embracing eSIM technology. Although Android phones have yet to fully adopt this change, it appears to be on the horizon. Despite the convenience that eSIM brings for both users and carriers, the transition process can be challenging. As eSIM becomes the standard, the procedure needs refinement, and more carriers need to come on board. Samsung and Google are rising to the challenge, with Samsung already allowing the conversion from a physical SIM to an eSIM. Now, Google is joining in with its own eSIM conversion tool for Pixel phones.

The Android 14 Quarterly Platform Update (QPR) 2 Beta 3 provides indications that Android users might soon be able to convert their regular SIM cards into eSIMs, as observed by 9to5Google. Traditionally, phones have relied on physical SIM cards for connecting to cellular networks. However, with this potential update, Android users will have the option to fully transition to eSIM, discarding the physical card. The objective is to simplify the process of switching between phones and carriers without significant disruptions to service.

Nevertheless, the journey with eSIM has not been seamless for everyone, as some users have faced service disruptions, and technical glitches have compelled individuals to visit their carrier’s physical stores for solutions.

There might be a positive turn of events, thanks to a new eSIM conversion tool designed for Pixel phones. The convenient option, labeled “Convert to eSIM,” has been identified in the SIMs menu of the Network and Internet section within the Settings app. While the button appears non-functional at present, if Android 14, especially on Pixel phones, lives up to expectations, this button could potentially extract details from a physical SIM and convert it into an eSIM, eliminating the need to switch physical cards between phones.

The visibility of the eSIM conversion tool in a pre-release version of Android 14 raises uncertainty about when or if it will roll out to the general public. Meanwhile, Google already offers a feature allowing users to transfer an eSIM from an old Pixel phone to a new one. The logical progression would be to enhance convenience by simplifying the entire process of physical-to-eSIM conversion. Now, the hope is that Google will not delay in expanding support to more carriers and devices.
