Indus Towers Commends Telecom Bill 2023 for Resolving Industry Concerns

The recent Telecommunications Bill of 2023 signifies a crucial effort to modernize the longstanding Indian Telegraph Act, which has governed the telecom sector for 138 years. Introduced in the Lok Sabha by the Union Telecommunications Minister, the bill aims to amend and consolidate laws related to the development, expansion, and operation of telecommunication services, telecommunication networks, and the assignment of spectrum, among other connected matters.

Indus Towers, a prominent Indian telecommunications infrastructure company providing passive infrastructure services to mobile network operators and other wireless service providers, has expressed commendation for the Telecommunications Bill. Prachur Sah, the MD and CEO of Indus Towers, highlighted the bill’s progressive provisions, especially its recognition of telecom infrastructure as Critical Telecom Infrastructure. This designation ensures network security with punitive consequences for damage, offering optimism that the bill will establish an effective adjudicating mechanism.

Sah emphasized the positive impact of the bill, anticipating relief from challenges such as multiple levies, taxes, Right of Way (RoW) issues, and ensuring uniformity across India’s diverse landscape. The commitment to a non-discriminatory RoW grant, delinking Telecom Infrastructure from property taxes, and other provisions contribute to building resilient telecom infrastructure, including telecom towers. Overall, the bill is seen as promising a comprehensive approach, addressing industry concerns, promoting security, and fostering innovation.

Several industry bodies, organizations, and companies have expressed support for the Telecommunications Bill of 2023. This includes the Digital Infrastructure Providers Association (DIPA), All India Fixed Internet Service Providers Association (AIFISPA), Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), Indian Space Association (ISpA), as well as key players like the CEO of Bharti Airtel, the CEO of Vodafone Idea (Vi), and the Chairman of Assocham National Digital Council. The widespread backing underscores the industry’s recognition of the bill’s significance in shaping a progressive and secure telecom landscape.
