India Secures the 10th Spot on the Global 5G Speed Rankings in 2023

India, having launched its 5G networks in October 2022, has rapidly ascended to the top echelons of global 5G speeds within just one year of official rollout. Ookla’s recent report highlights India as one of the leading countries in 5G performance for 2023, with a significant impact attributed to the swift deployment by operators in meeting the growing network demands of consumers. While countries like UAE and South Korea dominate the 5G median speed charts, boasting speeds of 592.01 Mbps and 507.59 Mbps, India has secured a noteworthy position in the top 10 with a speed of 312.26 Mbps.

The report underscores that after a 5G spectrum auction in India, operators successfully addressed network congestion by transitioning 4G traffic to 5G networks. Notably, countries in the Asia-Pacific region have surpassed their European counterparts in 5G performance, with six out of the top 10 countries with fast 5G median speeds hailing from this region. In the Q3 2022 data, India was absent, as the country had just announced its plans for 5G services. However, in Q3 2023, India has replaced Macau on the list, securing a position among the top 10 countries with the best 5G data speeds.

While India’s registration of median 5G speeds exceeding 300 Mbps is commendable, it is crucial to note that telecom operators have not yet introduced charges for their 5G networks. The imminent introduction of pricing may significantly impact the landscape, as more users upgrade to 5G-enabled devices. The forthcoming scrutiny of operators’ speeds and capabilities to handle higher user density will play a pivotal role in determining the true efficacy of 5G networks.
