Airtel Adds Mobile Users in Mumbai While Jio and Vodafone Idea Record Subscriber Decline in May 2026

Summary:
Bharti Airtel was the only major telecom operator to add mobile subscribers in Mumbai during May 2026, while Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea recorded customer losses, according to TRAI data. Despite an overall decline in wireless subscribers in the Mumbai circle, Airtel expanded its user base, indicating strong customer retention and network preference. The industry will closely watch upcoming TRAI data to see whether Airtel can sustain this momentum as Jio and Vodafone Idea intensify efforts to regain subscribers in the highly competitive market.

Airtel Registers Subscriber Growth in Mumbai as Jio and Vodafone Idea See Declines in May 2026

Bharti Airtel emerged as the only major telecom operator to expand its mobile subscriber base in Mumbai during May 2026, while both Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) recorded customer losses in one of the country’s most competitive telecom markets. According to the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Mumbai was among the few telecom circles to witness an overall decline in wireless mobile subscribers during the month.

Airtel Expands User Base Despite Overall Market Decline

TRAI’s May 2026 subscription figures show that the Mumbai telecom circle experienced a reduction in total wireless subscribers. Despite the shrinking market, Airtel managed to add new customers, distinguishing itself as the only operator among the top three to post positive subscriber growth in the region.

The company’s performance suggests effective customer retention efforts and a stronger appeal among users switching from competing networks, particularly in a market known for its high competition and premium subscriber base.

Jio and Vodafone Idea Continue to Lose Customers

Reliance Jio, which remains India’s largest telecom operator by subscriber count, reported a decline in its Mumbai subscriber base during May 2026. Vodafone Idea also witnessed further customer losses as it continues its efforts to recover financially and strengthen its network.

The subscriber departures from both operators appear to have contributed to Airtel’s gains. Industry observers note that Airtel has increasingly benefited from users seeking better network quality in key urban markets, particularly after industry-wide tariff revisions introduced in late 2026. Given Mumbai’s concentration of high-value subscribers, even modest customer additions can have a meaningful impact on operator revenues.

Focus Turns to Upcoming TRAI Data

The telecom industry will now monitor TRAI’s June 2026 subscriber report to determine whether Airtel’s growth in Mumbai represents a temporary improvement or the beginning of a sustained trend.

Vodafone Idea remains under pressure to reduce customer churn in high-revenue markets while continuing its network expansion initiatives. Meanwhile, Reliance Jio is expected to strengthen its customer retention strategy, particularly among prepaid users in Mumbai, as competition in the circle remains intense.
