Telecom operator Vodafone Idea (Vi) has further widened its 5G presence by launching commercial 5G services in the Union Territory of Puducherry, soon after introducing the next-generation network in Chennai. Vi extends 5G rollout to Puducherry
As part of its ongoing 5G expansion strategy, Vi stated that it is concentrating on key markets such as industrial centres, areas with high data usage, and developing urban regions. “Puducherry, popularly known as the ‘French Riviera of the East’, is not only a major tourist attraction but also an emerging centre for education and business activity, resulting in strong and sustained data demand from residents as well as tourists,” the telecom operator said on Friday, May 8, 2026.
Emphasis on tourism and high-traffic markets
The company noted that the deployment has been planned to provide higher internet speeds, better network efficiency, and smoother connectivity, especially in crowded areas, major tourist locations, and commercial districts.
Speaking about the launch, Sai Venkataraman, Circle Business Head – Tamil Nadu, Vi, said, “We are rapidly expanding Vi’s 5G network as we continue to strengthen our footprint across priority markets. After launching services in Chennai, expanding into Puducherry is another important milestone in this journey. Our strategy focuses on high-demand areas, including regions with heavy data consumption and locations with significant public activity such as tourism and commercial hubs, enabling us to deliver a reliable and improved network experience for users.”
“With this rollout, Vi aims to strengthen connectivity across Puducherry and address the increasing demand for high-speed mobile data services,” the company said in its official statement.
