C-DoT, a state-run organization, anticipates deploying domestically developed 5G telecom equipment within the BSNL network over the next 6-8 months, according to a senior official. CEO Rajkumar Upadhyay of the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) revealed that the company, in collaboration with startups Wisig and VVDN Technologies, has created an entire 5G network, including 5G standalone (SA) radio, core, and IP Multimedia System. C-DOT showcased its 5G equipment in a live video call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the India Mobile Congress 2023.
The 5G SA technology, which Reliance Jio is currently the only network to deploy in India, will be tested extensively before being rolled out in the BSNL network in 6-8 months. C-DoT plans to explore the possibility of selling its 5G telecom equipment internationally following its deployment in the BSNL network. India has a $60 billion trade deficit in the electronics sector, and locally developed 5G telecom gear could help address this gap.
