Vodafone Idea Seeks Long-Term Resolution on ₹78,500 Crore AGR Dues

Debt-laden telecom operator Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) is engaging closely with the government to develop a comprehensive and long-term solution for its massive ₹78,500 crore AGR dues, according to CEO Abhijit Kishore. Speaking during the company’s Q2 FY26 earnings call, Kishore said the telco is in talks with banks and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) for funding, but progress is tied to clarity on the AGR issue.

Impact of Supreme Court’s AGR Order

Kishore noted that the recent Supreme Court ruling—allowing the government to reassess and reconcile AGR dues, including interest and penalties up to FY17—provides a significant relief framework for Vi. The decision gives the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) the flexibility to review earlier demands and potentially ease Vi’s financial burden.

“The Supreme Court order gives us confidence that a more balanced and fair resolution is possible,” said Kishore, adding that lenders are also awaiting the government’s final stance before extending long-term credit.

Fundraising and Financial Strategy

Vodafone Idea continues to explore multiple funding channels, including equity infusion, debt financing, and asset monetization. The company believes that once the AGR issue is resolved, it will be in a stronger position to attract long-term investments and accelerate its 4G and 5G rollout plans.

As of September 2025, Vi’s total AGR liability stands at ₹78,500 crore, making its resolution critical to the company’s financial turnaround and sustained operations.

Significance for the Telecom Sector

A favorable outcome on Vi’s AGR reassessment could reshape India’s telecom landscape by stabilizing the sector’s financial health, encouraging investor confidence, and enabling Vi to compete more effectively with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. The government’s handling of this case may also set a precedent for future telecom policy reforms.
