Transitioning from VoLTE to Vo5G: A Closer Look at Technology and India’s Anticipation

The VoLTE Era

Back in 2016, VoLTE (Voice over Long-Term Evolution) revolutionized voice calling in India, offering crystal-clear conversations on par with popular messaging app quality. Now, with the advent of 5G, there’s anticipation for a new calling standard to match the next-gen speeds – enter Vo5G (Voice over 5G). This article explores what Vo5G is, its advantages over VoLTE, and the expectations for its arrival in India.

What Is Vo5G?

Voice over 5G, or Voice over New Radio (VoNR), is the potential future of voice calling. Unlike VoLTE tied to 4G, Vo5G enables voice calls over 5G networks, leveraging the speed, capacity, and responsiveness improvements of 5G for voice communication. It represents a significant shift in how mobile networks handle voice and aims to be ready as older networks like LTE sunset.

Advantages of VoNR Over VoLTE

VoNR brings several advantages over VoLTE, courtesy of 5G’s capabilities. It enhances call quality with superior clarity and fidelity, thanks to advanced audio codecs and increased data capacity. Faster call connection times, lower latency, and improved reliability are expected, addressing common issues like voice cutouts and delays.

Getting Started with Vo5G

Using voice calling over 5G or 4G LTE requires minimal effort. It works automatically if your phone supports Vo5G, your carrier offers it, and there’s a 5G signal in your area. Most phones released after 2022 with 5G likely support Vo5G, with VoNR usually enabled by default.

VoNR’s Arrival in India

As of now, VoNR is not available in India, even with the ongoing 5G rollout by major carriers. While there’s no official announcement, reports suggest Reliance Jio has been testing VoNR behind the scenes. The goal is to ensure smooth interoperability between existing 4G VoLTE networks and new 5G infrastructure. When VoNR services are fully rolled out, Jio is expected to lead, with competitors like Airtel and Vi following suit.

The exact timeline for VoNR availability in India remains unclear. Regardless, VoNR represents the natural evolution of voice calling in the 5G era, promising enhanced quality and seamless transitions between 4G and 5G connectivity mid-call.
