New AAE 2 Subsea Cable Announced Linking Asia, Africa & Europe

A new submarine cable project—the **Asia Africa Europe-2 (AAE-2)**—has been announced by a consortium including PCCW Global, Sparkle, Telecom Egypt, and ZOI, aiming to enhance global connectivity across Asia, Africa, and Europe.

The AAE-2 cable system will stretch from Hong Kong and Singapore to Italy, incorporating high-capacity terrestrial crossings through strategic regions such as Thailand, the Arabian Peninsula, and Egypt. This integrated terrestrial-subsea infrastructure marks a significant step forward in low-latency and high-capacity connectivity for the region.

While specifics such as total cable length, landing points, fiber pair count, and deployment timeline are yet to be disclosed—indicating the project is still in early planning—the consortium confirms that “strategic extensions to additional key destinations” are planned.

Seen as a next-generation upgrade to the AAE-1 submarine cable system launched in 2017, AAE-2 will add terrestrial corridors to improve speed, security, and network resilience. Sparkle CEO Enrico Bagnasco stated, *“With AAE-2, we’re building a distinctive infrastructure that blends terrestrial and subsea solutions to power the global digital transformation.” This announcement follows closely on the heels of Google’s new submarine cable agreement with Chile, signaling a growing push for next-gen global internet infrastructure.
