India Reaffirms Commitment to Lead Global 6G Development Minister

Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, reiterated India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in 6G technology during the ‘Bharat 6G 2025’ conference held in New Delhi. Pemmasani described 6G as a “civilisation-scale opportunity” and emphasized India’s journey from a technology adopter to a global standard-setter.

India’s 6G Vision

The event, held on May 14, 2025, brought together global tech leaders, researchers, and policymakers to align on India’s roadmap for pioneering 6G communications technology, according to the Ministry of Communications. Pemmasani urged stakeholders to view Bharat 6G not just as a technical milestone but as a national mission.

He highlighted that India has sanctioned over 111 research projects with a funding amount of ₹300 crore, ranking among the top six nations globally in 6G patent filings. “We have a vast talent pool and ample time; there is no reason for us not to lead in 6G,” Pemmasani said, as reported by PTI.

The Minister projected that 6G could generate entirely new industries, transform existing ones, and add up to $1 trillion to India’s economy by 2035. He also underscored the importance of indigenous development to ensure secure communications within India.

Transformative Potential Across Sectors

Pemmasani outlined 6G’s potential to redefine connectivity across key sectors like healthcare, education, agriculture, and smart cities. Bharat 6G Vision, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 23, 2023, aims for India to design, develop, and deploy 6G technologies by 2030

The minister highlighted the Bharat 6G Alliance’s role, the 111 funded research projects, and strategic global partnerships with Japan, Singapore, and Finland to drive innovation in terahertz communication and AI-native networks.

Technical Breakthroughs

Describing the technical promise of 6G, Pemmasani stated, “6G is not just an incremental improvement but a fundamental transformation—enabling terahertz frequency bands, 1 terabit per second speeds, sub-millisecond latency, intelligent self-healing networks, and volumetric connectivity from underwater to aerospace.”

India’s Innovation Capacity

Pemmasani reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the 6G mission, stressing that India’s scale, innovation capacity, and political will make it well-positioned to lead the global 6G journey. He concluded by saying that India’s 6G mission is set to drive digital transformation for the benefit of humanity, positioning the nation as a leader in next-generation communication technology.
