India Aims for Self-Reliance in Telecom Sector, Surprises the World with 4G/5G Tech

Neeraj Mittal, the Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), expressed India’s aspiration to achieve self-reliance in the telecom sector. He highlighted India’s remarkable progress in developing indigenous 4G and 5G technologies in a short period, noting that the country has “surprised” the world with its achievements. Mittal made these remarks at the ‘India Telecom 2023’ event, the 20th edition of which is organized by the Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC), in conjunction with the seventh edition of IMC 2023, organized by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) in partnership with the DoT.

India’s 5G deployment is one of the fastest globally, with substantial broadband speed increases and significantly reduced tariffs. The country boasts the world’s second-largest telecom network and has emerged as a leader in developing indigenous 4G and 5G technologies. India is home to an impressive one lakh startups, presenting ample opportunities for international collaborations.

Mittal recognized the substantial success of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, particularly in the manufacturing of telecom equipment and other non-telecom sectors. P. Balaji, Vice Chairman of TEPC, emphasized the need to create new business opportunities for Indian manufacturers by fostering greater startup participation within the industry.

India’s growing research and development capabilities are gaining recognition, with companies in the country making significant strides in customization, standardization, and production for specific applications. Collaboration with the global community is envisioned as India establishes itself as a telecom technology leader, with a strong presence in 4G and 5G technologies, affordable tariffs, and rapid 5G deployment, according to N.K Goyal, Chairman Emeritus of the Telecom Equipment Manufacturers Association (TEMA).
