India Surpasses Europe in 5G Expansion

The 5G network expansion landscape is evolving rapidly, with India taking the lead while Europe lags behind. Ivan Razon, Vice President of Strategy and Corporate Affairs at Ericsson, recently revealed significant data concerning the standalone availability of 5G between May 2022 and August 2023. During this period, India demonstrated an impressive surge in 5G infrastructure, surpassing the developments observed in Europe.

According to a prominent official, India has achieved a remarkable milestone in 5G network deployment, securing a spot among the top three countries globally with the largest 5G installed base. India’s 5G expansion pace has set records, marking a historic achievement in the telecommunications industry. Additionally, India boasts superior 5G download speeds, outperforming many developed nations.

Telecom companies in India express their satisfaction with the progress made, while senior officials acknowledge that there is still work to be done. Despite these remarkable achievements, telecom companies remain dedicated to supporting India’s digital transformation across multiple sectors, including industry, society, and public services.

In a recent virtual inauguration, Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav marked the commencement of a 6G lab initiated by a leading mobile network company. This lab’s primary objective is to accelerate the development of technology and use cases based on 6G, catering to the future needs of both society and industry. This collaborative platform will enable industry stakeholders to test innovative solutions and evaluate their potential for commercialization.

Significantly, the integration of sensors into the network has been identified as a crucial enabling technology. These sensors, operating on wireless networks and powered by communication services, play a pivotal role in bridging the digital and physical realms. This approach has received praise, with the ITU’s study group at the United Nations commending India’s vision for universal coverage under this technology during their recent meeting in Geneva.
