Summary:
BSNL and satellite giant Viasat are teaming up with OEMs to develop direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity in India. This advanced service will enable users to access voice, data, and messaging directly on regular smartphones — without the need for any special satellite equipment.
What Is BSNL & Viasat’s D2D Satellite Connectivity Initiative?
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), in collaboration with Viasat, is working to expand D2D satellite communication services in India. This technology leverages 3GPP Release 17 global mobile standards, allowing satellite-based communication directly on standard smartphones — no extra hardware or terminals required.
In the IAFI Space Policy Conference 2025, Viasat Managing Director Gautam Sharma shared the company’s vision to significantly score this D2D service in the end of 2025 or in early 2026. The objective is to bridge connectivity intervals across India – including untested rural areas and remote urban areas.
Key Highlights
- No special terminals required: D2D enables voice, messages and data services through smartphones directly through satellites.
- Demo already done: Viasat and BSNL successfully performed the two-way satellite message in India last year.
- Built on global standards: 3GPP uses release 17, a global benchmark for satellite-to-mobile communication.
- Defense collaboration potential: Viasat is searching for hybrid adaptive networks for trials with Indian defence forces.
- Call for regulatory support: Viasat seeks better orbital slots and frequencies to help India match global satellite capabilities.
Challenges Ahead
Despite its promise, D2D connectivity still faces hurdles:
- Fragmented global standards
- Limited chipset support in current smartphones
- Early-stage ecosystem for mass-market adoption
Why This Matters for India
To promote rural digitization and national security with India, D2D satellite services can become a game-changer. It supports connectivity in disaster sectors, remote areas, and SATCOM complements India’s move towards freedom. Sharma emphasized the need for flexible, multi -level network, which combines sovereign satellites with reliable commercial partners for future proof India’s digital ambitions.
