AST SpaceMobile and Vodafone Idea Deal Done for Satellite Broadband

In a strategic move to bridge India’s digital divide, Vodafone Idea (Vi) has announced a partnership with AST SpaceMobile, a U.S.-based satellite cellular broadband provider, to deliver direct-to-device satellite connectivity across underserved and remote regions of India. The collaboration aligns with the Digital India initiative’s goal of universal mobile access.

“Collaboration to bring Direct-to-Device satellite broadband connectivity to India, supporting Digital India’s vision of universal mobile access,” Vi said in a stock exchange filing on June 18, 2025.

Expanding Connectivity in Challenging Terrains

India, home to over 1.1 billion mobile users, boasts extensive 4G and growing 5G coverage. However, vast rural and geographically challenging regions remain difficult to serve via traditional mobile infrastructure. According to the official release, satellite communication will complement terrestrial networks to enable connectivity in such areas.

Seamless Access via Everyday Smartphones

The partnership will combine Vi’s nationwide terrestrial network with AST SpaceMobile’s space-based cellular technology, which allows direct connectivity to standard smartphones—with no need for special devices, software, or updates.

“Vi has always been committed to leveraging technology to connect every Indian,” said Avneesh Khosla, Chief Marketing Officer, Vodafone Idea. “We see satellite communication as a powerful complement to terrestrial coverage and look forward to ushering in a new era of seamless, resilient mobile access.”

Building the SpaceMobile Ecosystem for India

The joint initiative will focus on the design, deployment, and operation of a space-based mobile broadband ecosystem.

  • AST SpaceMobile will develop and operate the low-Earth orbit satellite constellation.
  • Vodafone Idea will manage spectrum integration, terrestrial infrastructure, and market access.

The system will enable services such as voice calls, video streaming, real-time data access, and emergency communications—even in the most remote areas. “India is the ideal market to demonstrate how our satellite technology can complement existing networks,” said Chris Ivory, Chief Commercial Officer, AST SpaceMobile. “Together with Vi, we aim to unlock new possibilities in emergency response, agriculture, education, and more—empowering millions through truly ubiquitous mobile broadband.”
