Odisha to Establish Cable Landing Station in Puri to Boost Digital Infrastructure

In a strategic initiative to position Odisha as a global digital hub, the state’s Electronics and IT Department is planning to set up a Cable Landing Station (CLS) in Puri. Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja reviewed the progress of the detailed project report (DPR) on 19th March, which is being jointly developed by RailTel and Deloitte.

According to an official release, the CLS project aims to enhance Odisha’s digital infrastructure, attract investments in data centers, bring in top-tier technology companies, and generate employment opportunities. Ahuja emphasized the importance of engaging with hyperscalers and key industry players to ensure a robust and future-ready implementation. He also directed the early submission of the DPR, with a target to complete the project within three years.

The Odisha Cable Landing Station is a flagship initiative designed for scalability and ecosystem growth. The state government is committed to making Odisha a key destination for digital investments, opening new opportunities for businesses, technology firms, and the workforce. Puri was chosen as the ideal location due to its strategic geographical position, suitable coastline, scalability potential, and strong infrastructure.

The CLS will provide direct international fiber connectivity, significantly reducing latency, improving internet speeds, and positioning Odisha as a prime hub for hyperscalers, Global Capability Centres (GCCs), and enterprises. Once operational, the facility will integrate Odisha into the global digital network, further strengthening India’s role in the data-driven economy.

A Cable Landing Station (CLS), also known as a submarine cable landing station, is a coastal facility where undersea fiber optic cables carrying international telecommunications and internet traffic connect to land-based networks. This infrastructure will play a crucial role in enhancing connectivity and driving technological growth in the region.
