Vodafone Idea Prepares for 5G Rollout to Stay Competitive

Vodafone Idea (Vi), India’s third-largest telecom operator, is gearing up for a major transition—its long-awaited 5G rollout. While the company continues to expand and enhance its 4G coverage and capacity, it cannot afford to ignore the rapid advancements in 5G. Unlike Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, which have already achieved nationwide 5G coverage, Vodafone Idea is just getting started. However, this does not mean Vi cannot make an impact in the market.

To be competitive, Vi needs to differentiate itself—possibly by offering aggressive pricing and bundled 5G plans at lower costs than Jio and Airtel. This could help attract new users and retain existing ones.

Vodafone Idea’s 5G Strategy: Targeting High-Value Markets

Vi has already started 5G testing in Mumbai, and a commercial rollout is expected this month. The company has confirmed that by April 2025, it will expand its 5G services to more cities. However, unlike Jio and Airtel’s broad rollout approach, Vi plans to deploy 5G strategically—focusing on cities and regions with the highest concentration of 5G smartphone users and high-paying customers. This cost-effective and targeted rollout strategy could give Vodafone Idea an advantage in optimizing investments while maximizing returns.

Boosting 4G/5G Subscriber Base is Critical

One of Vodafone Idea’s key challenges is increasing its 4G and upcoming 5G user base. The company needs to attract premium, high-paying customers to improve its average revenue per user (ARPU), overall revenue, and profit margins.

Following the recent industry-wide tariff hikes, Vi’s rate of 4G and 5G subscriber additions has slowed down, but it is expected to recover soon. A lack of a strong fourth competitor in the telecom sector also plays in Vi’s favor—offering an opportunity to attract users who may be looking for an alternative to Airtel and Jio.

However, the challenge remains: existing Vi customers could also switch to Jio or Airtel in search of better services. To retain and expand its user base, Vodafone Idea must ensure competitive pricing, superior network quality, and innovative offerings as it steps into the 5G era.
