India Plans Uninterrupted Power Supply for Growing Data Centres

The Ministry of Power is actively working to ensure a stable power supply for data centers, which are expanding rapidly due to the increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and other data-intensive technologies. To address this, the ministry is collaborating with various departments to develop a comprehensive roadmap for meeting the energy needs of these facilities.

Key Developments in Power Supply for Data Centers

  • Government Initiatives: The government is engaging with states and industry stakeholders to align the power supply with the rising demand from data centers. Discussions with the Ministries of Power and New & Renewable Energy aim to create a sustainable energy roadmap.
  • Renewable Energy Adoption: Many data center operators in India, including Yotta and CtrlS, are shifting towards renewable energy. Companies are setting ambitious targets to achieve 80% to 100% renewable energy usage in the coming years.
  • Infrastructure Costs & Support: Establishing data centers is capital-intensive, with electricity costs forming a significant portion of expenses. The government is considering subsidies to support smaller entities such as startups and research institutions.
  • Energy Efficiency & Sustainability: There is a growing focus on energy-efficient operations. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has introduced guidelines promoting innovative designs and “Green IT” practices to enhance sustainability.
  • Future Growth & Challenges: The Indian data center industry is poised for rapid expansion, driven by demand from sectors like finance and telecom. However, managing power consumption and ensuring sustainable energy sources remain critical challenges.

The Ministry of Power is also in discussions with Nasscom and key stakeholders to refine strategies for long-term energy sustainability in the sector.
