Google Introduces New Subsea Cable Systems Under Australia Connect Initiative

Introducing the Bosun Subsea Cable

Google has announced the Australia Connect initiative, a significant investment to strengthen digital connectivity and resilience across Australia and the broader Indo-Pacific region. As part of this initiative, Google will develop new subsea cable systems, building on its existing Pacific Connect infrastructure, according to a Google Cloud blog post.

The centerpiece of this project is the Bosun subsea cable, which will link Darwin, Australia, to Christmas Island and onward to Singapore. Named after the iconic white-tailed tropicbird of Christmas Island and a nautical term for a ship’s lead deckhand, Bosun represents both regional identity and maritime connectivity.

Introducing the Interlink Cable

Complementing Bosun, Google also revealed plans for a new interlink cable connecting Melbourne, Perth, and Christmas Island. This system will integrate with the Honomoana cable, part of the Pacific Connect initiative, creating a new pathway for seamless connections between the U.S. and Asia.

Collaboration with Industry Partners

Google is collaborating with partners like Vocus to expand terrestrial fiber networks, including a connection between Darwin and the Sunshine Coast. This terrestrial fiber will link Bosun with the Tabua subsea cable, which currently connects the U.S., Australia, and Fiji.

Other partners, including NEXTDC and SUBCO, are working alongside local and state governments in Darwin, Perth, and the Sunshine Coast to bring the Australia Connect vision to life.

Government and Industry Leaders Applaud the Initiative

Australian Minister for Communications commented “We welcome the Australia Connect initiative as it strengthens Australia’s digital connectivity through diversified routes, enhancing secure and resilient connectivity across the Pacific.”

Vocus Interim CEO noted, “Australia Connect will position Australia as a strategic gateway between Asia and the U.S., creating low-latency, reliable digital infrastructure. It ensures greater stability for Google and its partners while boosting Australia’s global digital standing.”

A Long-Term Commitment to Digital Infrastructure

This initiative is part of Google’s Digital Future Initiative, a five-year, AUD 1 billion investment announced in 2021. By 2027, the initiative is expected to add AUD 98.5 billion to Australia’s GDP and create 68,000 jobs, further solidifying the nation’s role as a global digital hub.

Through Australia Connect, Google aims to deliver low-latency, secure connections while fostering innovation and economic growth across the region.
