Aqua Comms Launches New Fiber Pair on AEC-1 Subsea Cable Network

Aqua Comms Launches New Fiber Pair on AEC-1 Subsea Cable Network

Global subsea connectivity provider Aqua Comms has activated a new fiber pair on its AEC-1 system, which connects New York, Dublin, and London. This move reflects the company’s increased investment in the AEC-1 platform to meet the rising bandwidth demands of its customers.

Energy Savings and Reduced Power Consumption

“This new fiber pair has allowed us to analyze the entire system and supplier network for substantial energy savings,” said Nick Barton, Chief Commercial Officer of Aqua Comms. By incorporating new technology, Aqua Comms can generate more capacity per fiber pair, improving power efficiency per terabit and creating a more sustainable system. Barton added that the system will also reduce regeneration needs at cable landing stations and simplify backhaul, creating a greener pathway.

Advanced Technology

The AEC-1 system currently uses Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme submarine network solution. In the coming months, it will incorporate Ciena’s 1.6 Tbps coherent optical solution, which is expected to lower energy consumption per bit by over 50% compared to the first fiber pair.

Aqua Comms AEC-1

The AEC-1, owned and operated by Aqua Comms, is Ireland’s first dedicated submarine cable network, connecting New York, Dublin, and London. Launched in early 2016, the AEC-1 system provides low-latency, high-quality transatlantic connectivity with diverse backhaul fiber to Points of Presence (PoPs) in the US, Ireland, and the UK.
