India has Low Call Rates and Data Rates, Says Scindia

India now has 1.17 billion mobile connections and 930 million internet connections, according to Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who addressed the Lok Sabha. He highlighted that call rates in India are among the lowest globally, with the cost per minute dropping from 53 paisa to just 3 paisa, representing a 93% reduction. Additionally, the cost of 1 GB of data is Rs 9.12, making it the cheapest in the world. 

Under the Digital India Initiative, the government has launched several technology-led startup and innovation schemes, including Technology Incubation and Development of Entrepreneurs (TIDE 2.0), Gen-Next Support for Innovative Startups (GENESIS), domain-specific Centres of Excellence (CoEs), and the Next Generation Incubation Scheme (NGIS), with a total funding outlay of around Rs 800 crore in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. 

As of March 2024, India has 954.40 million internet subscribers, including 398.35 million rural internet subscribers. Additionally, as of April 2024, 612,952 out of 644,131 villages (95.15%) in the country have 3G/4G mobile connectivity. The total number of internet subscribers in the country has grown from 251.59 million in March 2014 to 954.40 million in March 2024, achieving a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.26%.
