Scientists claim that a novel programmable antenna holds the potential to usher in a new era of 6G devices, smart city applications, and 3D holograms.
The researchers have developed a dynamic metasurface antenna (DMA) that can be manipulated by a digitally coded miniature processor, specifically a high-speed field programmable gate array (FPGA) integrated onto a chip.
This groundbreaking prototype, approximately the size of a matchbox, represents the world’s first successful operation with a 6G signal in the 60 GHz millimeter-wave (mmWave) band, typically designated for industrial, scientific, and medical applications. These findings will be detailed in an upcoming study slated for publication in the IEEE Open Journal of Antennas and Propagation.
