UAE’s TDRA 6G Roadmap is Here

The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) of the UAE has unveiled an ambitious strategy aimed at leading research and studies into 6G technology. This initiative represents a proactive approach to address the evolving landscape of International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT), focusing on intricate technical specifications to enhance the functionality and performance of mobile systems.

Strategy for 6G Research

The initiative is designed not only to meet the evolving needs of society and the economic sector but also to bridge the gap between current communication services and future requirements. TDRA emphasized that the release of this roadmap aligns with decisions made during the Radiocommunication Assembly 2023 (RA-23), which the UAE hosted in November 2023.

Anticipated Advancements and Applications

6G technology is expected to introduce a wide range of new capabilities, including advancements in artificial intelligence, network virtualization, sensing, and comprehensive coverage. Concurrently, existing capabilities of 5G will undergo enhancements aimed at improving efficiency in frequency spectrum utilization, connection density, and traffic management, according to the agency.

Anticipated advancements in 6G technology include support for various use cases such as digital transmission of human senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell) worldwide, robotics, artificial intelligence, autonomous intelligent transportation systems, and transformative developments in healthcare, such as remote surgery and diagnostics.

Timeline and Roadmap

The roadmap outlines a timeline for the launch of 6G services in the UAE before 2030, following strategic collaborations and experiments. TDRA will play a pivotal role in facilitating these experiments by providing the necessary frequencies and regulatory frameworks.

The Agency highlighted that in 2018, the UAE became the fourth country globally to deploy 5G. As 5G continues to evolve and enhance its capabilities, current plans include the ongoing development of the advanced 5G network (5.5G), with a targeted transition to 6G by 2030.
