Vodafone Takeover Not in Government Plans

The Minister of State for Communications, Devusinh Chauhan, has confirmed in the Lok Sabha that the government has no intentions of taking over Vodafone Idea (Vi). Responding to a query, Chauhan stated that there is no proposal under consideration for the government to take over the financially struggling Vodafone Idea. The government became the largest stakeholder in Vi earlier this year with a 33.1% stake, primarily aimed at providing financial relief to the telecom company. Despite being the largest shareholder, the government maintains a hands-off approach and does not interfere in the day-to-day operations of Vi.

In response to a question about Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), Chauhan mentioned that as part of the Atmanirbhar initiative, BSNL has placed purchase orders for 1 lakh indigenously developed sites for the rollout of 4G services. He highlighted that BSNL’s telecom services meet most of the quality of service (QoS) parameters according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) performance monitoring report. To enhance the quality and speed of data services, BSNL is actively working on rolling out 4G services.
