India Launches 5G-Powered Hackathon to Transform Law Enforcement

The Indian government has initiated a groundbreaking Hackathon, leveraging the capabilities of 5G technology to redefine law enforcement. This event aims to foster the creation of innovative applications and tools that will empower law enforcement agencies to proactively combat criminal activities. With a primary focus on ‘360-degree surveillance’ and ‘predictive policing,’ the Hackathon holds the promise of revolutionizing crime prevention and control.

Rajesh Kumar, CEO of the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), underscored the pivotal role of 5G technology in enabling swift data transfer. This acceleration will enable the real-time transmission of critical information to headquarters, arming law enforcement officers with the intelligence necessary to make informed decisions at crime scenes. Kumar emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to combating financial fraud originating from overseas, emphasizing collaboration between the Ministry of Home Affairs, financial institutions, Financial Intelligence Units, and the Department of Telecommunications.

Rajshekhara N. from the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) proposed the regular auditing of government websites to safeguard against hacking attempts by foreign agencies. Recognizing the evolving threat landscape, this proactive measure aims to enhance cybersecurity and safeguard sensitive information from unauthorized access.

The Hackathon has identified nine pressing challenges for participants spanning various sectors, including startups, academia, and MSMEs. Among these challenges, a critical task involves developing applications that offer real-time tracking of mobile users’ locations, reinforced by a robust authentication process. By capturing data such as time, date, speed, and direction of targets, this technology empowers field officers to prevent planned crimes, trace victims, and efficiently manage crowds.

The Hackathon will progress through three stages, including idea screening, with the finals taking place at designated physical venues equipped with 5G testbeds. Winners across various problem statements stand to receive a substantial reward of ₹1.5 lakh and will be celebrated during the concluding session in February 2024. Registration for the Hackathon is open from November 1 to December 9, presenting an exciting opportunity for individuals and organizations to contribute to the advancement of state-of-the-art law enforcement capabilities.
