Summary:
Reliance Jio and T-Mobile have achieved what they describe as the world’s first 5G Standalone (5G SA) roaming service through interoperability supported by Syniverse. The arrangement will allow Jio customers visiting the US and T-Mobile subscribers travelling to India to access 5G SA connectivity with faster speeds, lower latency and improved reliability. Syniverse provides the connectivity platform, while Jio remains the only Indian operator with a pan-India 5G SA network. Both companies said the development could support broader cross-network consumer, enterprise and AI-enabled services.
Reliance Jio and T-Mobile, two major telecom operators with a global presence, have achieved what they describe as the world’s first 5G SA (Standalone Architecture) roaming capability. The development was made possible through interoperability with Syniverse, T-Mobile said in a release. As a result, Jio subscribers travelling to the United States (US) will be able to access 5G SA services, while T-Mobile customers visiting India will receive the same capability. With T-Mobile serving millions of customers, international travellers will now be able to benefit from higher speeds, reduced latency and more dependable connectivity while using 5G SA. The companies described the development as a first-of-its-kind achievement.
Syniverse has supplied the connectivity platform supporting the service. It enables secure and seamless communication between the two networks while supporting the wider international adoption of next-generation mobile technology. Jio is currently the only telecom operator in India with a pan-India 5G SA (standalone) network presence.
Ankur Kapoor, Chief Network Officer at T-Mobile, said, “This is a monumental step for global wireless, and T-Mobile is proud to lead it. We started this journey back in 2020, laying the groundwork for a 5G Standalone future — and today, we’re continuing that leadership with Jio India as a partner on a global stage. Leave one country, land in another, and your 5G experience is just as seamless — whether you’re streaming, sharing travel reels or running business apps. That’s the breakthrough power of this technology.”
Mark Yarkosky, Head of International Network, Partnership and Services at Jio, said, “This is a transformational milestone and far more than just roaming—it’s about what becomes possible when two leading 5G Standalone networks work together. T-Mobile and Jio are laying the foundation for a new generation of cross-network capabilities and services, from differentiated consumer and enterprise experiences to AI-enabled services, leveraging the unique capabilities of 5G Standalone. This is the future of 5G SA: seamless, interoperable, and built to unlock new value.”
