Vi ₹350 Billion Funding Plan Faces Delays as Banks Seek Promoter Commitments

Vodafone Idea Limited’s (Vi) proposed ₹350 billion bank financing package has reportedly been delayed as lenders look for stronger assurances from the company’s promoters before sanctioning fresh loans. Although banks have largely accepted Vi’s updated financial projections after revising their own revenue expectations, they are seeking additional comfort through group company guarantees or clear commitments from the promoters to inject further capital or extend support if the company defaults.

The proposed funding is aimed at financing Vi’s capital expenditure programme, including the expansion of its 5G network. While negotiations with lenders are understood to be at an advanced stage, the final approval process is expected to take additional time.

Banks continue to exercise caution due to Vodafone Idea’s substantial debt, ongoing financial losses, and an uncertain revenue outlook amid intense competition from Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Public sector lenders are also encouraging greater participation from private banks, while the State Bank of India (SBI), which is leading the financing discussions, is reportedly reluctant to assume a disproportionately large share of the overall lending exposure.
