Rs 27,000-Crore Tata Chip Manufacturing Unit in Assam Nearing Launch

Summary:
India’s semiconductor manufacturing ambitions received a boost as the ₹27,000-crore Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility at Jagiroad, Assam, is expected to begin production within the current financial year. Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project is progressing as planned following a review with Himanta Biswa Sarma. Once operational, the plant is expected to produce up to 48 million chips daily using advanced packaging technologies, helping reduce India’s dependence on semiconductor imports and strengthening its position in the global electronics supply chain. The project, supported by workforce training initiatives and ongoing infrastructure development, is set to make Assam a major semiconductor manufacturing hub in the country.

India’s plans to establish a strong domestic semiconductor industry are moving forward, with the country’s first large-scale chip packaging unit in Assam likely to begin operations during the current financial year.

Union Minister for Electronics & Information Technology and Information & Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said the semiconductor facility being developed at Jagiroad is making steady progress and remains on schedule to start production before the close of the fiscal year.

The update followed a review meeting between Vaishnaw and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday, where the two leaders assessed the status of the project.

Sharing an update on X, Vaishnaw stated that discussions focused on the advancement of the Jagiroad semiconductor plant and reiterated the target of commencing production within this financial year.

The minister also pointed to developments at the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT), which is being strengthened to equip young professionals with semiconductor manufacturing skills and help meet the industry’s growing demand for trained talent.

Sarma said the meeting also covered the expansion of Assam’s railway infrastructure, including more than 1,300 km of ongoing track development and work on over 50 Amrit Bharat railway stations.

A cornerstone of Assam’s semiconductor initiative is the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) project at Jagiroad. With an investment of Rs 27,000 crore, it represents one of the Northeast’s largest technology manufacturing ventures and forms a vital part of India’s strategy to create a self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem.

After becoming operational, the facility is expected to manufacture up to 48 million semiconductor chips every day using advanced packaging technologies, including flip-chip and Integrated System in Package (ISIP).

The project is anticipated to significantly reduce India’s reliance on imported semiconductor components while enhancing the country’s role in the global electronics manufacturing and supply chain network.

With construction progressing steadily and skill-development programmes gaining momentum, the Jagiroad plant is moving closer to commercial production. If current timelines are maintained, Assam is poised to emerge as one of India’s key semiconductor manufacturing centres.
