GAIL and RailTel Enter into MoU to Explore Telecom Opportunities in India

The collaboration also seeks to improve infrastructure utilisation, support the development of future-ready networks and contribute to the country’s broader digital connectivity initiatives. 

GAIL (India) Limited has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with RailTel Corporation of India Limited to jointly explore opportunities in the telecommunications and digital infrastructure sectors. The collaboration seeks to enhance India’s communications ecosystem while ensuring more effective use of infrastructure assets across different industries.

As stated by the organisations, the agreement centres on cooperation in areas such as telecom services and the development of digital infrastructure. By leveraging their respective expertise in network systems and technological capabilities, GAIL and RailTel aim to contribute to the expansion of dependable digital connectivity throughout the country.

The MoU was formalised on March 5, 2026. Representing GAIL, Shri S S Agrawal, Executive Director (O&M-CO), signed the agreement, while Shri J S Marwah, Company Secretary and General Manager (Law) at RailTel, signed on behalf of RailTel. Senior representatives from both organisations were present during the signing, including Shri Rajeev Kumar Singhal, Director (Business Development) at GAIL, and Shri Sanjai Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of RailTel.

Commenting on the partnership, Shri Deepak Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of GAIL, stated that the collaboration reflects the company’s broader objective of bringing together energy infrastructure and digital technologies. He emphasised that emerging innovations, including artificial intelligence, are likely to significantly influence the future of infrastructure development and connectivity in India.

Gupta further noted that stronger collaboration among infrastructure-focused organisations can create new avenues for improving operational efficiency and speeding up development. According to him, alliances of this nature are essential for building resilient and future-ready networks capable of supporting the country’s expanding digital landscape.

RailTel’s Chairman and Managing Director, Shri Sanjai Kumar, remarked that the company continues to focus on reinforcing India’s digital backbone through secure and reliable communication networks. He added that partnering with GAIL will allow both entities to pool their expertise and resources to advance telecom infrastructure development.

RailTel, a public sector enterprise operating under the Ministry of Railways, has played an important role in extending broadband connectivity and establishing high-capacity fibre networks nationwide. Meanwhile, GAIL manages one of India’s largest natural gas pipeline networks and has been steadily broadening its infrastructure presence.

The collaboration between GAIL and RailTel is expected to focus on identifying new opportunities within the telecom sector that can strengthen India’s digital ecosystem while supporting the government’s wider digital connectivity initiatives. With demand for high-speed internet continuing to grow, integrating telecom networks with other infrastructure assets is expected to be key to expanding coverage and enhancing network reliability.
