BSNL VoWiFi Calling to Start Soon

BSNL VoWiFi Calling to Start Soon

Summary:
BSNL is preparing to launch VoWi-Fi (Wi-Fi Calling) soon, a feature already offered by private operators. Live pilots in two zones show strong results, and BSNL’s CMD has confirmed that the service will be rolled out after final approval. This upgrade will significantly improve indoor call quality for BSNL users.

BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) is finally moving closer to launching VoWi-Fi, a major service upgrade that will help it match private competitors like Jio, Airtel and Vi. In simple terms, VoWi-Fi allows users to make high-quality voice calls using their Wi-Fi connection, ensuring stronger indoor coverage even in low-signal areas. This directly answers one of BSNL’s biggest challenges—providing reliable indoor calling.

Most smartphones already support Wi-Fi calling, and BSNL’s pilots show promising results. According to BSNL CMD Robert Jerard Ravi, the telco is running live VoWi-Fi pilots in two zones, performing extremely well in indoor and weak-signal environments. He added that once the final approval is received, BSNL will launch the VoWi-Fi service for customers very soon.

Like private operators, BSNL will not charge extra for Wi-Fi calling. The feature is optional—users can turn it on or off from their device settings. Interestingly, many customers across networks do not enable VoWi-Fi even when available, although it often improves call clarity dramatically.

Ravi also highlighted a key benefit: even with zero mobile network signal, a BSNL 4G SIM user can still make calls using VoWi-Fi, if they have a stable Wi-Fi connection. With nearly 1 lakh BSNL 4G sites live, the upcoming Wi-Fi calling launch signals BSNL’s next major step toward modernizing its network.
